“I—I—I have not Mme. Forester’s diamond necklace!”
He jumped up, frightened—
“What? How? It is not possible!”
“I don’t know what happened!”
He began to search the room frantically.
“How could you lose something of such great value?” She tired her best to hold her composure.
“I cannot believe I was so irresponsible.” “I was only trying to be lavish and elegant for just one night.” She began to sob heavily.
“That is the problem with you babe; you are trying to be something that you are not.” “You always look lavish and elegant to me, and just to let you know the clothes don’t make the person their attitude does.”
Madam Loisel felt very moved by her husband’s kind words. They both continued to look for the necklace.
“You must call Madam Forester and tell her what happened to the necklace.”
“I shall not do such a thing it would crush her to know I lost something this precious.”
They sat in their small dusty apartment and begun to think of ways they could get the necklace back.
“I’m going out to look for the necklace. Did you take the number of the cab?”
“Yes, I did the number on the cab was 57.”
He jumped back in his clothes and headed straight for the door. He walked the way the came in the cab. Dawn was slowly coming in and M. Loisel was beginning to become restless. He took a cab ride back to the house. When he was about to pay for the cab he saw that the number on it was 57.
“Sir did you by any chance happen to see a necklace in your cab a few hours ago?”
“Hey I remember you.” Said the cab driver. “You and your wife rode in here earlier.”
“Yes we did sir, my wife can’t find the necklace she was wearing did she drop it in your cab.”
“Here you go sir I found it in here.” The driver handed him the beautiful necklace.
“Thank you so much sir.” M. Loisel gave the driver a small tip for giving him the necklace. He walked in the house worn out from all his walking. Madam Loisel was asleep when he walked in. He hid the necklace somewhere she would never find it. He decided he was going to teach her a lesson about being happy with the life she had.
The next morning Madam Loisel began to cook breakfast for her husband before he went off to work.
“Good morning dear.” She said “Did you buy chance happen to find the necklace?”
“No dear I did not find it.”
Over the next few months Madam Loisel found her a job and began to work so she could pay for the necklace. She tried to avoid her friend as much as possible during the time.
“I see she has been working hard” said M. Loisel I think it’s time I give her the necklace.
When Madam Loisel returned home from work he had the necklace sitting on the kitchen table.
“My goodness where did you find it?” she said
“I had it since the night you lost it I just wanted to teach you the value of a dollar and to appreciate what you do have my love.”
“Well I sure learned my lesson.”She called her friend and returned the necklace to her.
